About Yogabilitation

While it has long been recognised that sedentary behaviour is associated with increased risk of chronic diseases, such as diabetes and heart ailments, there is now a growing body of evidence supporting the importance of regular physical activity for lung health; both for the population in general but also for people living with chronic lung conditions.

Regular physical activity has been shown to improve quality of life and fitness in healthy individuals and to reduce the risk of chronic disease. Beneficial effects of regular physical activity on lung function decline Clearly, being physically active has many advantages for the rest of the body and organ systems, and keeping active is one of the major messages that need to be communicated to all with regards the chronic disease agenda.

there is a level of physical activity for everyone, which is both possible and beneficial: run a marathon; choose to take the stairs rather than the lift or escalator; cycle to work rather than drive; walk to the next bus stop rather than the one you usually wait at! Simple steps; the right amount of exercise

These steps are even more fun when carried out in a social environment.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation

Pulmonary rehabilitation is a comprehensive intervention that includes exercise training, education, and behaviour modification, designed to improve the physical and psychological condition of people with lung diseases.

The evidence is increasing for the efficacy of several kinds of exercise training as part of pulmonary rehabilitation aimed at reducing dyspnea and fatigue, as well as improving health-related quality of life and exercise capacity in individuals with COPD.

Yoga has been included as a component of exercises prescribed for many pulmonary rehabilitation programs. Studies of short term yoga practices have reported improved lung function parameters, decreased breathlessness-related distress

Yoga therapy program includes asanas; pranayama; relaxation techniques; meditation; yogic counselling for stress management; chanting; and lectures on yogic lifestyle and philosophy.

The yoga training has shown much benefits significantly in all problems secondary to chronic lung diseases when compared to only medication therapy. The current evidence suggests that yoga training has a positive effect on improving lung function and exercise capacity and could be used as an adjunct pulmonary rehabilitation program

Yoga can now be included as an adjunct to conventional therapy for treating lung diseases.
